Unlimited Outdoor Youth Banquet March 5

MOSES LAKE – Tickets go on sale for the annual Youth Outdoors Unlimited fundraising banquet on March 5. YOU is a Moses Lake organization that gives young people with physical challenges or life-threatening illnesses the chance to go on a fishing or hunting adventure. The action begins with a silent auction at 4:30 p.m. at the Best Western Plus Lake Front Hotel, 300 W. Marina Drive.

Youth Outdoors Unlimited provides suitable equipment for children who need it, as well as the help of hunting and fishing guides.

Sometimes a hunting or fishing trip is successful, sometimes not. Those who pass receive a plush, mounted trophy, usually presented at a banquet, either at Moses Lake or at other YOU banquets held throughout the state and region.

Hunting and fishing trips are free for children and their families and are adapted to everyone’s needs. Owners donate the use of their property and guides donate their services. The outfitters provide the necessary equipment. If a child catches an animal or catches a fish, the professionals donate the meat processing and the taxidermists donate their time to mount the trophies.

Every angler and hunter knows that there are no guarantees – although, as one former participant pointed out, it is enough to know that they have done their best. So every family enjoys a complete outdoor experience. Participants and their families can go camping, go out on the boat if they are fishing, sometimes leave the dock before it gets light, as one former fisherman recalls.

Young people, guides and families sometimes drive on secondary roads if they hunt or sometimes wait in a store. Since the program began, Adventurers have hunted deer and elk in Washington, Oregon and Idaho, bear in Canada and antelope in Wyoming. They also fished salmon in the Columbia River.

Sometimes there’s camping and campfires, and there’s always camp food. The organizers take into account all dietary needs. Participants do their shopping before going hunting or fishing to make sure they have the right equipment.

Tickets are available on the YOU website, www.youthoutdoorsu.org. Other fundraisers are scheduled for Olympia on April 2 and Wenatchee on April 24.
