A person has disappeared after failing to return from a Sunday fishing trip in the east Bay of Plenty, police say.

Police were alerted to the missing individual at 4pm and emergency services launched a search operation, but the man was still missing on Monday afternoon.

They continued their search with coastguards and inflatable rescue boats and a small plane was dispatched, a police spokesman said in a statement to Thing.

“The police were notified at 4 p.m. [Sunday] that a person had not returned from a fishing trip as planned earlier [in the] afternoon.

“Search and Rescue Police and Coast Guard carried out a search yesterday and the search resumed this morning.

“The man has not been located at this time,” the spokesperson said.

Whakatāne District Council Mayor Judy Turner was shocked to hear the fisherman had not returned home.

“It is obviously devastating to hear, and we hope for his family and friends that he will be found.

“You just hope they’re found alive and healthy,” Turner said.
