As the planet becomes increasingly responsible for the mess we’ve made to our oceans, new companies are creating a host of sustainable products made from marine litter. One of these Japan-based designer teams created a new sustainable bag made from recycled marine litter and fishing nets. The Ghost Net Burster line of bags is now available on Kickstarter with prices starting under $ 30.
“It is estimated that more than 100,000 marine mammals are suffocated or injured by discarded fishing nets. What we can do in the textile industry to reduce marine debris as much as possible… Collect abandoned fishing nets before they become GHOST NET. Instead of treating it like industrial waste, reuse it as a resource. With these ideas in mind, this project was born. And in order to make our business known to people around the world, we have prepared a wonderful award and are launching it on Kickstarter with the support of Japanese casual bag-making boosters. Early bird commitments at a special price are now available for the recently launched project starting at around $ 35 or £ 26 (according to current exchange rates). If the Ghost Net campaign successfully achieves its required pledge goal and production progresses smoothly, global shipping is expected to take place around September 2021.
“In order to make a fabric, we have developed a 100% recycled yarn by combining pellets from fishing nets and pellets from waste yarn generated at the spinning plant. This is how the recycled nylon “GNB” fishing net is made. It is a soft, strong and flexible nylon material and the surface is treated with a water repellent finish.
After repeated prototypes, we imagined the backpack and the mini shoulder bag that we would like to present to you. Thanks to the cooperation of propellerheads, a company specializing in bags, we have been able to create products with simple designs, functionality and sophistication.
