Legislating for wildlife | Columns

“There is one!” my son screamed when he saw the fun noodle hitting the water and starting to take off. The hunt was on, and we finally found the catfish pulling the “jug” like a scene out of “Jaws“, and I had him on the stringer. In about an hour, we had two more cats in the bag.

It wasn’t until later, long after the fillets had been put in the freezer, that I thought about how these fish and the fun opportunity to harvest them with my son had appeared. Or, how come we enjoy those wonderful deer, turkey, and even elk hunts in the United States these days. Or why we now have an abundance of bald eagles, American alligators and other once endangered species. While we may blame our government from time to time, it is legislation that helps ensure the conservation of fish, game and all other species for future generations to enjoy.
