XENIA — John Robert Shaw, 86, formerly of Xenia, Ohio, has dealt his last poker hand. John passed away on January 30, 2022 at his residence in Union, KY after many years of health issues that never seemed to slow him down. He was born September 18, 1935 in Lebanon, OH to William and Mary (Gultice) Shaw. John graduated from Xenia High School in 1953 and went to work after graduation at Dayton, Power and Light, Co as a meter reader. In 1955 he enlisted in the army and did his basic training at Fort Leonardwood, MO before being sent to Okinawa after the end of the Korean War. John returned to Xenia and returned to his job at DP&L, eventually working up to First Class Lineman. He loved his job, often called in during holidays and weekends because he didn’t want anyone without electricity. He volunteered for disasters in other states, never refusing to work, especially during ice storms. He worked tirelessly to reconnect power to Xenia after the April 3, 1974 tornado. John met and married Nancy Heaton in 1959 and honored their “sick and well” vows for 62 years. John was not one to sit still and engaged in many social activities, joining the benevolent and protective Order of Elks as a young man and becoming an exalted ruler. He remained a loyal member of the Elks for over 60 years. Whenever John had a chance, he would find himself on the golf course, a fishing trip, or a winning bowling team. He and Nancy enjoyed traveling around the United States with their 5th Wheel RV group, eventually landing a second home in Fort. Myers, FL. After a 45-year career at DP&L, he still wasn’t ready to “sit quietly” so he enjoyed a second career at WA Hammond Drierite until he was 84. He and Nancy then moved to Kentucky to be near their daughters. Jean was preceded in death by his parents; his brothers William Shaw; Charles (Martha) Shaw and his son-in-law, Dr. George Barber. He is survived by his wife Nancy Heaton Shaw; daughters Cheryl Shaw Barber of Versailles, KY and Jennifer (Chris) Paxson of Union, KY; Sister Carolyn (Carl) Elliott of Xenia; Sister-in-law Dorothy Shaw of Xenia, OH and grandchildren Eric Caudill of Versailles and Victoria Silvati of Indianapolis, IN and many nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 9 at McColaugh Funeral Home, 826 N. Detroit St., Xenia, Ohio. Visitation will be from 1:30 p.m. until service time. John’s family is asking those in attendance to wear face masks. In lieu of flowers, John would be honored if contributions were made to the Elks Scholarship Fund. Contributions may be mailed to the Elks Scholarship Fund, POBox 297, Xenia, OH 45385 in memory of John Shaw. Online condolences can be sent to the family at www.mccolaughfuneralhome.com.
