An Ohio man who helped his girlfriend dispose of the corpse of his six-year-old son by throwing the boy’s body off a bridge and into the Ohio River pleaded guilty on Tuesday to a series of crimes that could potentially cause him put behind bars for almost two decades.
Appearance before the judge Noah Powers II Butler County Common Plea Court, James hamilton, 42, pleaded guilty to one count of kidnapping and gross abuse of a corpse. He also admitted two counts of endangering children for helping Brittany Gosney, 29, try to cover up the murder of James robert hutchinson, 6, according to a report by Cincinnati CBS affiliate, WKRC. Judge Powers informed Hamilton he faced a maximum sentence of 19 years in prison.
In return for Hamilton’s guilty plea to all four counts, prosecutors agreed to drop 11 more charges.
Gosney pleaded guilty last week to one count of murder and two counts of endangering a child after pleading not guilty by reason of insanity. She faces a mandatory life sentence, but could be eligible for parole in 15, 18 or 21 years.
Authorities say Gosney confessed to trying to abandon Hutchinson and her two siblings, aged 7 and 9, at the behest of Hamilton, who allegedly pressured her to get rid of the children.
As previously reported by Law & Crime, court documents indicate that on February 27 at around 3:00 a.m., Gosney drove his children to a parking lot in the Rush Run Wildlife Area, where the family had already gone on a fishing trip. However, this time, Gosney reportedly tried to abandon the park children by walking away. Prosecutors said Hamilton had “tied up” the children for hours before they arrived at the park, according to the Cincinnati Applicant.
But before Gosney could put a distance between her and the kids, six-year-old James allegedly grabbed one of the 2005 Dodge Grand Caravan’s door handles and held on as Gosney walked away.
“Brittany has slammed the gas trying to let the children and [dragged] Hutchinson may have knocked him down, ”court documents said. “Brittany turned around to check on Hutchinson and he was dead.”
Gosney reportedly told investigators that after finding out her son James was dead, she and Hamilton brought her two children alive and James’ body to her home. There, she and Hamilton put the remains of the dead boy in a friend’s room and kept them there for about a day. Gosney and Hamilton then reportedly returned the remains of the 6-year-old to the vehicle, traveled to a bridge near Lawrenceburg, Indiana, and dumped the remains in the Ohio River.
Hamilton’s wife and sister, who both attended Tuesday’s proceedings, spoke to the WKRC after the hearing.
“Brittany [Gosney] said your husband forced her to get rid of the children, ”a TV channel reporter asked Priscilla hamilton, Hamilton’s wife.
“I don’t believe so,” she replied. “[Gosney] I never wanted these kids at first. She really didn’t.
Hamilton’s sister, Virginie abney, shared a similar sentiment.
“That’s not all about him,” Abney told the outlet. “He’s not a monster. He’s a really good guy. He was wrong and he is paying the price.
Butler County Attorney Mike Gmoser disagreed, calling Hamilton a “monster.”
“The monster named Hamilton, who did monstrous things to little Jimmy when he dumped his body in the Ohio River – it’s the act of a calculated monster,” Gmoser said, according to WKRC.
Gosney is due to be sentenced on September 13. Hamilton is due to be sentenced on October 4.
