Elizabethtown Kentucky Day Trip

We spent most of the day in Elizabethtown, Kentucky, about an hour’s drive south of Louisville.

Funtopia at American Legion Park

A brand new playground opened, we went to a giant park nearby and ate some delicious food on our day trip to Elizabethtown.

Enjoy a day trip to Elizabethtown! A brand new playground opened in Elizabethtown, KY in April 2022, and it’s SUPER FUN. Funtopia Playground is on the grounds of American Legion Park. The park also includes a pool and wading pool, tennis courts, green spaces, plenty of seating, a war memorial for Hardin County residents with a mini-reservoir, and nice clean bathrooms.

The old wooden playground was demolished a year ago and replaced with a new giant metal playground. The play area is ideal for everyone – it has equipment for big kids, equipment for small children, handicapped accessible equipment and a small paved path next to the playground (the small paved section is called the “Born Learning” trail for following the instructions of the painted trail (activities, tricycling, and chalk art).

The bathing area has a separate entrance and is open seasonally. Check it out for a summer day trip to Elizabethtown. It features a plunge pool, giant waterslide, overwater climbing wall, overwater basketball nets, small children’s play area, paddling pools and other fun activities.

Lots of seating around. There is a covered picnic table pavilion, open picnic tables, benches and swings inside the play area and around the green space. Perfect if you’re from Louisville and want to pack a picnic.

There is also a Hardin County War Memorial commemorating residents of Hardin County who sacrificed their lives in service to the country. Near the memorial, there is also what looks like a small reservoir. It is actually a locally created prototype for a remote control war vehicle created in 1981. It was created with a machine gun, grenade launcher and self-destruct function. Very cool.

The bathrooms were very clean (we know parents care too) and close to the office where there are staff on hand to watch the park. We can’t wait to go back when the swimming area is open and explore the park in a whole new way!
Elizabethtown Day Trip Lake Freeman State Park:

Then we headed to Freeman Lake Park. This 170 acre park is a hidden gem behind a bustling commercial area. They also have a lot of events in this park throughout the year. It has so much to offer. As the name suggests, this park sits along a very large lake and also has historic buildings on site.

There are paddle boats, Jon boats, and kayak rentals for $2 to $5 an hour, or $10 to rent a rowboat all day. You can buy a fishing license on site, but bring your own fishing gear. The boat dock is handicap accessible / stroller accessible as well.

There are lodges for rent, or simple grills and picnic tables in the area if you want to bring some stuff to grill at their picnic areas. It’s something to remember for the summer and would be a great outing for family gatherings.

There are playgrounds, swings, a tennis complex, a pickleball court, a sand volleyball court, an 18-hole disc golf course, a very long paved path for walking/walking. stroller/bike and dog parks. Bring your sports supplies, bicycles, and walking shoes on your day trip to Elizabethtown. You can spend a day of active fun in this whole park.

As for history at the site, there is the Lincoln Heritage House, the One Room Schoolhouse, and the Sarah Bush Johnston Log Cabin. Tours are available the 1st Saturday and Sunday of each month between 1:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m. from June to September.

The Lincoln Heritage House is a restoration of a four-room cabin built circa 1805. Abraham Lincoln’s father grew up in Hardin County and did carpentry work on this house. Who knew?!

The one-room schoolhouse from 1892 looks like an episode of Little House on the Prairie. How interesting to find all of this after just looking for a cool playground!

The Sarah Bush Johnston Log Cabin is a replica of Abraham Lincoln’s mother-in-law’s house. There’s always something to learn when you’re having fun, and it’s proof that Lincoln is everywhere you turn in Kentucky.

Discover some restaurants in the area during your day trip to Elizabethtown:

The Back Home restaurant is a great place to have lunch as you can also look around for interesting items. You can find their menus here full of things like Honey Chicken Mac N Cheese and Fried Green Tomato Burger. The shop offers sweets, gift items and home decor among other things.

We made a quick stop at Amazin Glazin Donuts. He did not disappoint. If you’re there for lunch or dinner, there are tons of fast food chains to choose from in the area, but I highly recommend Back Home Restaurant and Shoppe. Delicious food and a cute shop downstairs and a shop upstairs.

Unfortunately our last stop was to be Heartland Mini Golf which was not open yet but should be soon, with ice cream. We will have to come back soon for another day trip to Elizabethtown!
