Delayed Harvest Streams - The DH streams are
warm and mostly void
of trout right now. If you are looking for trout I suggest going
somewhere else this time of year. The regulations will change
back to Catch and Release on October 6, 2007
and we'll be ready. If you want to see what all the fuss is
about,
drop me a line and we'll get your date booked for the October thru June
part of the season (Catch and Release).
Wild Trout
Streams - The Wild Trout Streams are in great
shape and fishing great. The fish are hungry, and really
fattening up right now. Be sure you have great presentation, be
stealthy and you'll catch fish! Now is a great time to wet wade
your favorite wild
stream with a small box of flies. We've been having success
plopping
beetles and hopper in the center of the pool and letting the trout come
to
the fly rather than trying to cast to the fish. It's all about
presentation this time of the year, if you are spooking fish..... slow
down, add some
lighter tipper, downsize your fly and your odds will be much better.
Hatchery
Supported Streams - HS Streams are getting
warmer, and have been fished hard all spring and summer. A few
fish are still hanging around but as usual most of the HS streams have
been fished heavily. Few trout are still being caught and a few
big hold overs can be caught right now but as the water gets low and
warm, these fish are getting tougher to catch.
Smallies -
IT's SMALLIE TIME!!!! Not only smallie time but smallies on top
water poppers!! Our spring was good and wet, our start of summer
has also provided some much needed water in the rivers. The
rivers are at the best levels I've seen them in years and so far this
summer the fishing has been awesome for lack of a better term.
Lots of thick fat smallies hammering the poppers both worked hard and
some nice subtle takes on the long twitchless floats.

Delayed
Harvest Streams - The DH streams were stocked
heavily the
first week of March and are full of fish. Of course they are getting a
bit
wiser everyday and tougher to catch the longer they are in there.
Last week I fished and or guided on several area DH streams and they
all
seem to have been stocked well. Lots of big fish in this stocking
from what I've seen. Present your fly to them correctly on the
first
cast and they will eat I assure you. These DH streams are a great
place to your fishing "fix" during the winter. It doesn't matter
if
you are new to trout fishing or a seasoned angler these streams can
provide
fun for every type of angler.
Wild Trout
Streams - The Wild Trout Streams are fishing
pretty tough right now. The fish are in their winter patterns and
really are only eating when they have to eat. During the middle
of the day is your
best bet to get into wild trout right now, sleep in a little later and
then
fish the "heat" of the day for best results. Keep you eyes open
for
mid day hatches of Quill Gordons. If you see them hatching give a
nice
fluffy Adams dry fly a shot. I think you'll be surprised how fish
will
rise to dry flies all winter long!
Hatchery
Supported Streams - HS Streams are closed the
month of March
until the first Saturday in April.
Smallies -
Well the smallie season is just around the corner. In fact some
of the hard core smallie guys are starting to catch some. Most of
them are being caught using jigs and worms worked
extremely slow. Smallie fishing this time of year is tough, be
patient
and slow down is the key! But April is just around the corner and
things
should be heating up.
September 07 - For more reports check out THIS LINK

We'll it's September already, summer is
nearly over. Just a few more weeks of this hot dry weather and
then the cooler temps should start moving in. In fact while
camping on the river last weekend I had to put on a long sleeve t-shirt
for the first time in a long time. Cooler temps will bring hot
fishing though. As the waters cool the smallies will slow on the
top water bite and eventually slow down for the winter. But as
you probably know the trout fishing will heat up.
Area tailraces are continuing to fish
great, terrestrials are the fly of choice this time of year. Some
BWO hatches here and there but for the most part it's hopper/dropper
time. Plopping beetles, ants and big hoppers has worked well for
the past few weeks and
will continue into the fall months.
On the local wild trout streams, again
hoppers, beetles and ants have been producing some really nice
fish. The stream levels are on the rise with the rains we had
late last week and will continue to improve. It's a great time of
year to head deep into the woods
in search of those wild trout.
Local Hatchery Supported streams have also
been fishing fairly well. Like all HS streams you need to get
away
from the big over fished stocked holes and do a little fish
"hunting".
Many hold over trout willing to eat your fly, just get away from the
easy
access points.
Delayed Harvest streams are fished out for
the most part. Few trout here and there but for the most part
they
have been fished hard. But October is just around the corner and
the
regs will change back to Catch and Release. This year the change
date
is Oct. 6.
We have been booking many trips for
floating the Tuck during the DH season. If you have always wanted
to catch
large trout using big streamers this is the trip for you. Or if
you
are more interested in one of those 50+ fish days, we'll hook you up
with
some nymph patterns that the trout just can resist. Either way
it's
time to get your date booked as soon as possible, our calendar is
filling
quickly.

I've been lucky enough to spend many
days on the water this month. At this point I'm not sure how many
days so far but I can tell you one thing..... fishing is GOOD!
From
the high mountain brook trout streams to the warm water smallmouth bass
rivers the water levels are really low but the fish are active and
hungry.
Last weekend (Aug 17,18 and 19) I spent two
days rowing our local smallie river and one day chasing brookies way up
in the hills. Had good days all three days with several nice
smallies landed
on top water poppers using the fly rod. Poppers of choice a size
6
white popper. Nothing fancy popper wise but the trick has been
long
drag free drifts. On the brookie stream trip we were able to
trick many
brookies into eating our flies. Elk Hair Caddis flies produced
nice
fish all day long.

Wild Trout
Streams - The Wild Trout Streams are extremely
low right
now but fishing great. The fish are hungry, but they are really
really
spooky. Now is the time of the year for great presentation, extra
stealth
and long leaders. Now is a great time to wet wade your favorite

mostly fished out right now. A few fish are still holding on but
for the most part the HS streams have been fished out. Not saying
a few big hold overs can't be caught right now but with the low warm
water, these fish are tough to catch.
Smallies -
IT's SMALLIE TIME!!!! Not only smallie time but smallies on top
water poppers!! Our spring has been incredible and summer
is following suit. Yes the rivers are low but the smallies don't
seem to mind. Many 25+ fish days so far this season already.

Delayed
Harvest Streams - The DH streams change from
Catch and Release to Catch and Keep on June 2nd this year. It
will not take long for
them to be cleaned out. I suggest going somewhere else this time
of
year. Although we have had a great DH season with lots of
big
trout being caught all winter long. The regs will change back to
Catch and Release on October 6, 2007 and we'll be ready. If you

No use carrying 1,000 flies, just a few Elk Hair Caddis, Parachute
Adams
and you'll be set. It's all about presentation this time of the
year,
if you are spooking fish..... slow down, add some lighter tipper,
downsize
your fly and your odds will be much better.
Hatchery Supported Streams - HS Streams are in
full bloom right now. Lots of fish, lots of fishermen and plenty
of water to fish. NC is blessed with so many HS streams, get out
and do a little hiking and you are sure to find some
solitude. Never over look fishing streamers in the HS
streams. These fish see lots of fishermen and offering but they
have a had time turning down a big juicy baitfish
pattern.
Smallies -
IT's SMALLIE TIME!!!! Summer time is here and so are the top
water smallies. We have been having an incredible spring / summer
so far. Lots and lots of nice smallies on top water
poppers! Give us a call and we'll get you set up on a smallie
trip that
you'll never forget.
Look for some new pictures to be added over
the next few weeks. I've got some very nice fish pics, just
haven't had the time to get them loaded onto the site.
