Mom and Dad came in last night and are leaving tomorrow, so that left today as the only day Dad and I got to fish together this year so far. After being in the car for 14 hours yesterday he didn't really want a long drive to go fishing. I decided that the 15 minute drive to the Ararat DH would be best. I figured that they just stocked it earlier in the week, even with it being in the high 80s the last 2 days the water temps shouldn't be too bad, so it should fish ok. Boy was I wrong. We made it a full day starting at 6:30 and stopping around 3. A 1st for me since I've only fished it for 1-1 1/2 hours the previous times. The water temps were in the low 60s. Not too bad, but we did see some dead trout along the banks. I started a little slow then picked up from about 9-12. We then moved the truck from the lower end of the greenway to the upper end to finish. The afternoon fishing was a little slower, but still good. Between the 2 of us we landed over 70 fish, and probably missed or lost another 40-50. I out fished him getting 40+ to his 30+, but he got the biggest fish, a 22" brookie. They stocked mostly brookies this time. Between the 2 of us there were only 6 bows and 2 browns caught. I have to say word seems to getting out about this little treasure. Other than on the weekends, today was the 1st time I've seen more than 1-2 other people fishing the river. I still have yet to see any signs of poaching on it, so I'm keeping my fingers crossed it stays that way next season. The big boys didn't seem to want to play with me. I had about a 15" throw the fly right as I was going to net him, I lost about a 20", and rolled another about 15". Finally near the end of the day I got this 17" bow.
Sorry the pic's not the worlds greatest. The camera on my phone has a really slow shutter speed.
