Anybody know if there are runs of rainbow trout out of Lake James, Lure or Adger?

Thanks

lake lure used to have a fall run of browns, but they have been getting less and less it seems, and its a really short window, i've hit it twice in 5 years i've tried.  most of the higher elevation mountain lakes have runs though, such as fontana.

I do not know about Adger and James, but years ago they did stock Steelhead in Lake James.   Supposedly, they did not take, but occassionaly they catch rainbows out of that lake.

Yeah I know the rivers feeding Lake Lure and Adger are stocked so the trout I have seen there probably were not lake run fish but holdovers.

Thanks for the info about James.

the browns in lake lure run every fall, so theres at least some wild ones in the mix, even though the river feeding the lake is hs.  one of my buddies said a rainbow run used to happen, but its been years since he has seen it.  santeelah and fontana are good places to find running fish.

I think they used to stock Lake Lure with rainbow trout but no longer do.

I have a client that lives on Lake Lure and is part of the committe that handles the stocking of the lake.  I spoke with him last week and he said that trout have not been stocked in Lake Lure since 2006 (I think he said 2006, may have been 2007).  Last year they shocked numerous areas of the lake to see what species were doing well and they only found one brook trout which was at the mouth of the Rocky Broad.  Mostly a bass fishery now from what he was saying.

Interesting. I wonder if they shock the deep water where the trout live.

Any walleye in the lake?

Thanks

I'll ask and let you know.  As an aside, he did say they were stocking thousands of trout up to that point at $1.83/lb and were having horrible problems with poachers keeping the fish so they discontinued the stocking.

from what ive heard its difficult to shock deeper parts of lakes well, especially deep mountain lakes with their narrow channels.

I do not doubt that at all.

Plus it would be even more expensive to truck the fish to the lake with high gas prices now.

Too bad Lake Lure and the other lakes there are privately owned.

Got more info on Lake Lure.  Definitely no Walleye.  They are about to stock 20,000 thread minnows.  Because the water is so clean, it takes a largemouth about 6 years to grow to 14 inches.  As a comparison, it only takes two years to grow that length in Lake Wylie.  This is why the heavy stocking of feeder fish.  They are also looking at adding literally tons and tons of lime to make for a more conducive environment for baitfish and other edibles.  Pretty fascinating info that he gave me.  Never heard of water being "too clean".

Pelican Lake in Juno Beach, FL used to be an awesome bass fishery. Nice grass beds and everything. The Snowbird "homeowners" decided it didn't look "clean" and was unattractive. They forced the town to "clean" it up and destroyed almost the entire population. I know for a fact that there used to be largemouth bass pushing 15# in it, and I'd usually land 15-20 fish in 1-2 hours of walking the bank. I never used a canoe. If I had I would have had a shot at the big boys.  But alas the water is now "clean" and most of the fish are gone.

Thanks for the info

I hope they do not add the lime.

It would be an expensive waste of time I would guess. How long would the lime stay in the lake before discharging from the dam?

I think liming would be a temporary fix and expensive for a 700 acre lake ( I believe that is Lake Lure's size from their website)
